Your Morning Routine Could Be Quietly Protecting Your Kidneys

The kidneys are vital organs that filter out waste products from the blood, regulate blood pressure, and balance fluid, electrolyte, and pH levels in the body. Most people don't think much about kidney health until something goes wrong — but according to dietitians, the drinks you reach for each morning may be quietly working for or against these hardworking organs.

Lifestyle habits, like diet, are key to healthy kidney function. "Diet plays a major role in kidney health because the kidneys help to process and regulate many of the nutrients we eat and drink," says Lydia Bunszel, M.S., RD. The encouraging news? Something as simple as your morning beverage can help support your kidneys.

The Five Drinks That Make the List

Dietitians recommend water as the top morning beverage for healthy kidneys. The reasoning is straightforward. "Water is the best morning drink for your kidneys because it gives your kidneys what they need to start the day doing their job," shares Beverly Garden, RD. "After your body goes hours without fluids, drinking water in the morning dilutes waste products so your kidneys can filter more easily," she adds. Water has no calories, sugar, or additives — it is, without a doubt, the best choice for kidney health. Kidneys use water to filter waste and keep the body working correctly.

Coffee, green tea, kefir, and cranberry juice may also support kidney health. Coffee often surprises people as a kidney-friendly choice. "People who drink coffee actually [may have] a lower risk of both kidney disease and kidney stones," according to dietitian Melanie Betz, M.S., RD, CSR. Not all coffee drinks are healthy, however — drinking black coffee, instead of coffee with high-potassium and high-phosphorus milk or high-calorie sugary drinks, will be your best bet. Green tea earns its spot for similar reasons. "Green tea has been shown to protect against kidney damage by providing antioxidants and supporting anti-inflammatory mechanisms in the body," according to dietitian Hernandez.

Kefir is perhaps the most unexpected entry on the list. Kefir is a fermented milk drink that promotes gut health, supports healthy bones and muscles, and may even help manage blood sugar. Research studies have found that people with chronic kidney disease have reduced amounts of beneficial gut bacteria — which is where a probiotic-rich drink like kefir may lend support. While probiotic-rich drinks like kefir may help, they shouldn't be viewed as a miracle cure. Rounding out the list is cranberry juice. Cranberries contain compounds called proanthocyanidins, or PACs, which help prevent bacteria from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract — instead, they get flushed out before they can cause an infection. When choosing cranberry juice, opt for 100% juice without added sugars.

The Bigger Picture: Diet, Disease, and What You Can Control

"What we eat and drink has a major impact on kidney health. The top two causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, respectively. While there are certain factors out of our control, such as age, genetics, and family history of kidney disease, our diet and lifestyle are two things we do have control over," states Hernandez.

Eating a balanced diet matters too — both the Mediterranean Diet and DASH diet have been shown to support healthy kidneys. And when it comes to beverages, the guidance is consistent: choose unsweetened drinks and stay hydrated to help kidney function. Without healthy kidneys, waste products and excess fluid can build up, leading to serious health complications.

The takeaway here is refreshingly simple. You don't need an expensive supplement regimen or a dramatic dietary overhaul to start supporting your kidney health. Regardless of which beverage you choose, staying hydrated is essential for optimal kidney function. A glass of water when you wake up, a cup of unsweetened coffee or green tea alongside it, and a mindful approach to what you pour in your glass each morning could pay long-term dividends for two of the body's most essential organs.
