The Numbers Tell a Troubling Story

The results were striking. Autoimmune disorders were reported by 18% of residents living within five miles of SSFL, compared with just 4% of those living 11 to 15 miles out. Metabolic and endocrine disorders followed the same pattern — 15% versus 2%. The closer you live to the site, the sicker you appear to be.

More than a third of residents reported at least one chronic diagnosis since moving in — on par with the national rate of 38%, even though chronic illness is normally far less common in high-income communities. That detail matters enormously. Wealth typically acts as a buffer against poor health outcomes — better nutrition, better healthcare access, less stress. The fact that residents near SSFL are getting sick at rates that mirror the broader national average, despite their economic advantages, points to something environmental at work.

When Money Can't Buy Safety

Superfund sites typically cluster in low-income communities, where 62% of households earn less than $50,000 annually. But near the Santa Susana Field Laboratory in the hills northwest of Los Angeles, people are much wealthier — and this anomaly gave researchers an opportunity to study how wealthy residents respond when money cannot buy their protection from an environmental hazard. It's a rare and revealing natural experiment.

Rocket testing from 1949 to 2006 and nuclear reactor operations from 1953 to 1980 left radioactive and chemical waste in the soil and groundwater at SSFL. Despite Superfund eligibility since 2007, the site remains unlisted on the National Priorities List, which means any form of remediation is managed at the state and local levels. In other words, the federal government has not committed the resources needed to fully clean it up — and the community is still paying the price.
