Finn's Take· TL;DRIt was late at night in Saleh Bay, Indonesia, when fishermen hauling in their lift-nets spotted something strange drifting near the surface — a pale, spotted shape far smaller than anything they had seen before. It was a whale shark, an endangered species, but at just 1.3 to 1.5 meters long, it was clearly a neonate — a baby only a few months old. For scientists, this was no ordinary catch. To date, no whale shark pupping ground has ever been confirmed anywhere in the world. This tiny animal could change that.
Globally, sightings of individuals under 1.5 meters are vanishingly rare — only 33 have ever been recorded in the scientific literature. In August 2024, fishermen operating lift-net fishing vessels in eastern Saleh Bay reported five separate sightings of a small whale shark estimated at 1.2–1.5 meters in length and approximately four months old. That cluster of encounters, all within a single month, sent researchers into high alert.
The whale shark can grow up to 18 meters in length and is recognized as a keystone species of biodiversity, meaning it plays a significant role in shaping its ecosystem. Despite its size and ecological importance, the reproductive behaviors of this species are poorly understood, including where females go to give birth. That's a staggering gap in our knowledge for an animal this large.
Only a single pregnant female — caught off Taiwan in 1995 — has ever been closely examined, revealing hundreds of embryos at different developmental stages. But researchers have never observed where females give birth, or how newborns use their habitat once they enter the open sea. Whale sharks have an unusual way of reproducing: the mother does not lay eggs in the ocean. Instead, she keeps the eggs inside her body and gives birth to live pups. Sometimes a single mother can carry over 300 baby whale sharks inside her. Yet somehow, those hundreds of pups virtually vanish the moment they are born.
In a new study led by Konservasi Indonesia — the local partner of Conservation International — scientists say this pattern of sightings offers the strongest evidence yet that Saleh Bay may be the world's first known pupping and nursery habitat for the species. "Scientifically, this is a very strong signal and indicates that Saleh Bay is likely to have an ecological function as a birthing and pupping ground for whale sharks," said Mochamad Iqbal Herwata Putra, Senior Manager at Conservation Indonesia. He added, "If later proven to be a birthing location, then Saleh Bay will be the first location in the world to have been definitively identified."
The discovery of neonates strengthens the case, showing that Saleh Bay — a wide and semi-enclosed stretch of water, calmer and more sheltered than the open sea — may support whale sharks across multiple life stages. Separately, researchers studying the broader mystery of whale shark births have found another intriguing clue: by analyzing rare sightings of neonate whale sharks, researchers mapped their locations and compared them with oceanographic conditions, suggesting that elusive nurseries may be linked to areas with low oxygen levels and high productivity — a combination that could offer pups both food and protection.
The pup's discovery strengthens the scientific case for granting the area formal protection. The young whale shark faces multiple threats in the bay, including entanglement in fishing gear, declining water quality from coastal activities, and increased vessel traffic. Survival during the earliest life stages is considered critical for the future of the global whale shark population.
Saleh Bay remains a strong potential pupping ground, but cannot yet be confirmed as an official birthing site — scientists still require more conclusive evidence before designating the area as a whale shark nursery. Konservasi Indonesia plans to expand monitoring efforts to determine whether sightings of whale shark pups occur regularly, strengthen community reporting systems, and advance plans for a marine protected area that protects the species while supporting community-based conservation. If Saleh Bay is confirmed as the world's first known whale shark birthplace, it would be one of the most significant marine discoveries in decades — and a powerful argument for protecting every square mile of it.
