Finn's Take· TL;DRA gang-related dispute at Plum Creek Apartments spiraled into a deadly exchange of gunfire when two individuals began shooting at each other, striking not only themselves but four others who were standing nearby. The shooting unfolded in the 5900 block of Plum Creek at approximately 8 p.m. on June 18. What began as an argument ended with six people rushed to the hospital and a community left shaken.
All six victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries. As of Friday afternoon, one victim was recovering from surgery and another remained in critical condition. Among those critically injured is Wyatt Fjetland. Fjetland was shot in the head and remained in critical condition, with family saying the outlook was not favorable.
Texas DPS officials arrested a suspect the night of the shooting — 18-year-old Jeremiah Hunter, who was charged with tampering with evidence and booked into the Potter County Jail. But investigators weren't finished. The new arrests that followed were the result of continued investigation by Amarillo Police Department Violent Crimes Detectives, Task Force Officers, and staff from the Amarillo Regional Crime Center.
Police announced on Friday that 18-year-old Davion Ashley was arrested on a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and was also charged with resisting arrest and assault on a peace officer. A second suspect, Jacob Jimenez Jr., 20, was identified during the investigation, with detectives obtaining a warrant charging him with tampering with evidence. Jimenez was also booked into the Potter County Detention Center on additional on-view charges, including resisting arrest, assault on a peace officer, and manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance over four ounces. A third suspect, Awetik Rahma, 18, was arrested on a warrant for tampering and fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair.
Multiple APD units responded to the investigation, including Violent Crimes and Homicide detectives, Crime Scene Investigation, the Amarillo Regional Crime Center, and the Gang Unit. The breadth of the response reflects how seriously local law enforcement is taking the incident — and the broader issue of gang activity in the city.
On Thursday afternoon, APD addressed public concerns about gang violence in a social media post, stating, "Like many in our community, we are deeply saddened and concerned by the recent acts of violence in Amarillo," and acknowledging the "fear, frustration, and questions" many residents were experiencing. That kind of direct communication from law enforcement signals an awareness that the community's trust is on the line, not just the criminal case.
All three of the newly arrested suspects have been booked into the Potter County Detention Center. That brings the total number of individuals taken into custody in connection with this shooting to four. Each faces serious charges, ranging from aggravated assault with a deadly weapon to evidence tampering and drug-related offenses — a web of alleged criminal conduct that investigators are still working to untangle.
Police confirmed that the investigation remains active and ongoing, and that additional information will be released as it becomes available. With one victim still in critical condition and multiple suspects facing arraignment, the full legal and human consequences of that Wednesday night shooting are still playing out. Whether additional arrests follow will depend on what investigators continue to uncover in the days ahead.
