Finn's Take· TL;DRIn the early hours of August 5, an abandoned SpaceX rocket stage is expected to slam into the Moon at around 8,700 kilometres per hour. It will be a violent, unplanned end to a piece of hardware that was simply left adrift — and nobody had the authority, or the obligation, to prevent it.
Launched in January 2025, the Falcon 9 ferried two landers to the Moon — Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and Japanese firm ispace's Hakuto-R. With its work done, the rocket lacked the fuel to return to Earth or move into deep space, and it remained in an unstable orbit until gravity finally set it on a collision course with the lunar surface. The upper stage, roughly 12 meters long and weighing 4,000 kilograms, is predicted to impact near Einstein Crater, producing a crater 20 to 30 meters wide and a multi-kilometer ejecta plume.
The crash is a rare opportunity to record an artificial impact in real time. It will also let scientists test a new method for pinpointing exactly where objects strike the Moon, which could help prepare for future lunar seismic experiments. Twenty-three astronomers have already issued an appeal calling on colleagues and amateurs to join forces in observing this extraordinary impact.
The hollow structure of the rocket stage should crush rather than deeply penetrate the surface, making the impact flash and dust cloud potentially observable from Earth. By good fortune rather than good planning, the rocket's collision is expected to occur near the isolated Einstein Crater, away from many significant lunar sites. That luck, however, is not a policy — and experts are quick to point that out.
SpaceX has unintentionally acquired the power to permanently alter the Moon, and there is almost no international process for deciding whether, when, or where that should happen. At the center of the discussion is the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, the foundation of international space law with 138 state signatories. Under this treaty, no country can claim sovereignty over the lunar surface — instead, the Moon is regarded as a place to be explored and used for the benefit of all humankind. But that lofty principle comes with almost no enforcement mechanism.
The incident raises concerns about the tradeoffs of handing over space launches to private companies that are increasingly dispatching more objects into space with few plans for how to deal with the space junk left behind. The Aerospace Corporation has assessed that a single debris-generating collision event in cislunar space could produce a hazard field that persists for thousands of years — far longer than the decades-long debris clouds in low Earth orbit, where atmospheric drag eventually pulls fragments down.
SpaceX's more recent Falcon 9 upper stage that launched the EscaPADE spacecraft in November 2025 was placed on a solar orbit trajectory — suggesting the company is moving toward better cislunar disposal practices. But that development was a commercial choice, not a regulatory requirement.
"Infrastructure on the moon is currently sparse enough that we aren't too worried about these kinds of uncontrolled impacts, but that will change in the future," said Anncy Thresher, an assistant professor at Northeastern University. "We need to be proactive now about how to regulate and remove space junk to avoid catastrophes going forward." With NASA's Moon Base program targeting a first crewed landing in the 2028 timeframe and human missions to the South Pole planned through the 2030s, the window for establishing cislunar debris governance before it becomes an operational safety issue is narrowing. The August 5 impact will leave a fresh crater on the lunar surface. Whether it also leaves a mark on international space policy is the more consequential question.
