Anthropic's Spending Spree Shows No Signs of Slowing

Anthropic began aggressively pursuing cloud agreements after running into a supply crunch earlier this year as usage of its products climbed. The Lambda deal is just the latest in a breathtaking series of commitments. The company agreed to spend $45 billion to rent capacity from Nscale's West Virginia data center campus, and has also signed deals worth $50 billion with neocloud Fluidstack Ltd. and $45 billion with SpaceX.

Anthropic alone has committed $180 billion to capacity recently — a figure that would have seemed unthinkable just a few years ago for any technology company, let alone one that launched its flagship product only in 2023. Hut 8 commercialized Beacon Point's second phase in July through a 15-year, triple-net lease covering 352 MW of IT capacity, carrying $9.8 billion of base-term value and a 3% annual base-rent escalator.

What This Means for the Future of AI

The deal underscores that energized, leased data center capacity is now the scarcest AI asset, attracting long-term commitments from industry giants. Separately, Hut 8 is also building additional Texas data centers for Anthropic that will run on Google's tensor processing units instead of Nvidia hardware, with Google backing those projects through financial guarantees that help Hut 8 secure debt financing. That parallel arrangement signals that Anthropic is deliberately diversifying its hardware bets — not putting all its chips, so to speak, in one basket.

The broader picture is one of an AI industry that has moved well beyond software competition into a full-scale infrastructure war. Companies like Anthropic aren't just racing to build smarter models — they're racing to secure the physical foundation those models run on, locking in capacity years in advance.
