"We'll have a moon base, people living and working on the moon," Dylan Taylor said, adding that people on Earth will eventually be able to look up and see lights from lunar settlements. That's not the plot of a science fiction film — that's the near-term forecast from one of the most connected figures in the private space industry. Some of the world's most powerful tech billionaires think your next job posting could come from another planet. Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Sam Altman have all predicted a future where humans live and work in space — and now Voyager Technologies founder and CEO Dylan Taylor is backing them up, with a very specific timeline attached.

"Humans will definitely be living and working in space," Taylor told Fortune. "The next step would be the moon. That'll happen in the 2030s — probably early 2030s," he added. For most people, the moon is still just a glowing object overhead. Taylor wants to change that perception fast.

What Kind of Work Are We Talking About?

The first jobs on the moon, Taylor argued, will not be the kind that humanoid robots like Elon Musk's Optimus can handle alone. Resource mining, orbital data center construction, and power grid installation are the roles he sees opening first — work that requires human judgment and adaptability in environments where robotics still falls short. In other words, the lunar economy won't just be for astronauts with advanced science degrees. It will need builders, engineers, and infrastructure workers.

Taylor said the industry is already scaling up from the handful of astronauts aboard the International Space Station, which has hosted humans continuously for 26 years, to something far larger. That progression — from a handful of people in orbit to a functioning settlement on another world — is exactly the arc he believes is already underway. Unlike the moon, Mars is more of a contingency than a destination for Taylor, due to the vast distance and radiation issues.

The Man Behind the Prediction Has Real Skin in the Game

After accumulating substantial wealth through ventures in electronics, financial services, banking, and property investments, Taylor pivoted entirely to space exploration at age 37. In 2017, he founded Space for Humanity, a nonprofit that plans to purchase seats on commercial spaceflights for people who wouldn't typically have access. Two years later he founded Voyager — and that bet paid off last year, when the company went public on the NYSE, hitting a $3.8 billion valuation, and turning Taylor into a billionaire at 53.

Taylor flew to space himself on a 2021 Blue Origin flight, becoming the 606th person to leave Earth's atmosphere. The experience, he said, reinforced rather than tempered his confidence in the timeline. This isn't a billionaire talking from a distance — he has personally experienced what he's predicting for millions of others.

Voyager Is Already Building the Infrastructure

Voyager is now building the replacement for the International Space Station and holds multiple NASA contracts. Through its Voyager Lunar Systems division, formed after acquiring Astrobotic Technology, the company holds an approximately $298 million NASA contract for two lunar landers, with the first mission targeting the lunar south pole no earlier than November 2026. Voyager has also made a multi-million-dollar strategic investment in Max Space, a company developing next-generation expandable habitats designed for sustained lunar operations.

The pieces are moving into place with unusual speed. What was once the exclusive domain of government space agencies is rapidly becoming a commercial enterprise — one with job listings, supply chains, and balance sheets. Voyager is also leading the development of Starlab, the ISS's commercial successor, with Palantir, Airbus, and Mitsubishi. If Taylor's timeline holds, the generation entering the workforce today may not just read about moon bases in history books — they may clock in at one.
