Devastating Injuries Shock Medical Staff

A 28-year-old Beaumont man has been arrested and charged with a first-degree felony after a 1-year-old girl was severely beaten and airlifted to a Houston hospital in critical condition. Howard Dewayne Walker Jr., 28, the boyfriend of the child's mother, was taken into custody Thursday by Special Crimes Unit detectives and charged with Injury to a Child – Serious Bodily Injury, according to a news release from police.

"Staff at the hospital stated that the child had life-threatening injuries that were consistent with blunt force trauma and that she was barely alive when she made it to the hospital," said Beaumont Police Department Public Information Officer Chancellor Van Houten. A supplemental consultation with Texas Children's Hospital clinicians documented facial fractures, a grade 5 liver laceration, pancreatic injury and active adrenal bleeding, according to the affidavit. The clinician advised the injuries were consistent with inflicted trauma requiring significant force, not accidental mechanisms or an allergic reaction.

KFDM News has obtained an affidavit for the arrest of a man in what police call a horrific case of child abuse involving his girlfriend's one-year-old daughter, and it indicates the child was severely beaten, had burn marks, bruises to her liver, a swollen eye, internal and external bleeding, and that the suspect used bleach to try to clean blood from the home. Witnesses say he applied a frozen orange juice can to her face to reduce the swelling.

Evidence Points to Deliberate Cover-Up

The patterned, curved and linear bruising across the trunk and the constellation of internal injuries are inconsistent with self-inflicted or short falls and occurred during the bounded time frame in which Walker was the sole caretaker with exclusive opportunity. Walker's attempts to clean the residence with bleach and his inconsistent statements further indicate consciousness of guilt. Walker later failed a polygraph in regards to having any involvement in the injuries to the victim.

The investigation began Tuesday, December 16, at approximately 1 p.m., when Beaumont Police Department officers were sent to a Southeast Texas hospital regarding the girl, who was exhibiting signs consistent with child abuse. Detectives with the Special Crimes Unit responded and launched an investigation. Witnesses say the little girl was found unresponsive and gasping before she was taken to Baptist Hospital.

Severe Legal Consequences Await

Walker's bond was set at $1,000,000 by Judge Marc DeRouen. He ordered Walker not to have contact with the victim or victim's family if he's able to post bond, and he must wear GPS and remain confined to his home. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.

The girl's mother expressed her shock and betrayal, stating, "I trusted this person because I never saw or felt that he would do the things he did..." The victim remained intubated and sedated in critical condition. This case underscores the vulnerability of children in domestic settings and the critical importance of recognizing warning signs of abuse before it escalates to life-threatening violence.

Community Response and Prevention

The Beaumont Police Department says it remains steadfast in its commitment to protect the most vulnerable members of the community and will continue to thoroughly investigate all allegations of child abuse. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call BPD at (409) 832-1234 or Southeast Texas Crime Stoppers at (409) 833-TIPS (8477). All Crime Stoppers tips are anonymous and you may be eligible for a cash reward.

This tragic case highlights the devastating reality that children are most vulnerable to abuse from those closest to them. Child protection experts emphasize that recognizing behavioral changes, unexplained injuries, and concerning patterns in caregiving relationships can be crucial for early intervention. As this one-year-old fights for her life in a Houston hospital, her case serves as a stark reminder that protecting children requires vigilance from entire communities, not just law enforcement.
