China is poised to launch Chang'e-7, its most technologically complex lunar mission to date, in its search for frozen stores of water in permanently shadowed craters near the moon's south pole. The launch window opens on the morning of August 24 local time — the evening of August 23 EDT. If it succeeds, the payoff could be enormous — not just for China, but for the future of human life beyond Earth.

We've known for nearly two decades that some form of water exists on the moon. What we still don't know is exactly how much accessible water ice lies inside permanently shadowed craters, how deeply it is buried, or what form it takes. Scientists think these craters could act as deep freezers capable of preserving ancient water and volatile organic compounds. Temperatures can drop to as low as minus 203 degrees Celsius (minus 334 Fahrenheit) in some of this shadowed terrain, according to NASA.

A Robot That Hops Into the Dark

The mission includes an orbiter, as well as a lander, which carries a rover and a novel "hopping" robot. That hopper is the mission's most innovative element. The Chang'e-7's six-legged hopper has been designed to jump into and out of the deep, shadowed craters near the south pole that are hard for traditional rovers to reach, to look for water ice and other resources.

The hopper, equipped with a water molecule analyzer, will use its small thrusters to fly into shadowed craters, land on six articulated legs, and then hop back to sunlit rims to recharge. The hopper could become the second spacecraft, after NASA's Ingenuity Mars helicopter, to make separate flights across an extraterrestrial body — and the first mobile legged spacecraft to carry out exploration beyond Earth. The mission's lunar target is Shackleton Crater, a 21-kilometer-wide pit with a rim that grazes the moon's south pole — and no other spacecraft has ever landed so close.

Why Water on the Moon Changes Everything

Finding accessible water is crucial for future lunar bases, as it could provide drinking water, oxygen for astronauts, and even serve as raw rocket propellant, reducing the need for costly resupply missions from Earth. Scientists now need to find out how much ice exists, where it's located, how hard it will be to extract, and its quality — and Chang'e-7 is looking to answer those questions.

If water ice is widespread and common in these shadowed regions, there will be more lunar real estate worth settling near. But if there are very few places where it exists, it could matter enormously who gets there first — if they're not willing to share. As part of its Artemis program, NASA's Moon Base would be sited near the south pole; so, too, would China's International Lunar Research Station, for which Russia is a major partner.

A New Space Race With Real Stakes

There has never been a landed mission specifically designed to find water on the moon. If China succeeds, experts say it "will have surpassed everyone, including the United States, in lunar exploration in the short term." The mission represents a major step toward Beijing's long-term goal of building a permanent human presence on the moon, with plans underway for a crewed lunar landing before 2030 and the setting up of a joint research station with Russia by 2035.

The spacecraft will take up to six days to reach lunar orbit, where it will then spend two months preparing for a November landing meant to be a near bull's-eye on the lunar south pole. Chang'e-7 is scheduled to make this attempt before NASA's VIPER lunar south pole volatiles-hunting mission, which could launch in 2027. Whatever ice Chang'e-7 finds — or doesn't find — will shape the next chapter of human ambition in space, and likely determine who gets to write it.
