The deaths occurred between June 24 and July 24 around Kimana Sanctuary and Kuku Group Ranch, near Amboseli National Park, an ecosystem home to more than 1,600 elephants. The animals roamed near the park, which borders a farming and livestock area around 140 miles south of the capital Nairobi. Officials describe this as the region's deadliest such incident in decades.
The deaths were first reported late last month after rangers began noticing elephants falling ill before collapsing and dying. The Kenya Wildlife Service said preliminary testing of samples from the carcasses detected traces of cyanide, while 10 of the elephants reportedly showed signs of partial paralysis before dying. Most animals deteriorated rapidly, collapsing within two days of showing their first symptoms.
Officials said the stomach contents of one dead elephant contained "lots of tomatoes," raising concerns that contaminated crops may have been responsible. Kimana is one of Kajiado County's major tomato-growing areas. KWS Director General Prof. Erastus Kanga said preliminary laboratory analysis of samples collected from the carcasses detected traces of cyanide, pointing to agricultural chemicals as the likely cause of the deaths.
Authorities did not say who they suspected in the contamination, but in the past, farmers have been suspected of deliberately poisoning elephants to prevent them from eating crops. It's a grim but understandable dynamic. Elephants can consume up to 600 pounds of food each day, and during dry seasons when natural forage is scarce, they frequently wander onto farmland — destroying in hours what a family has spent months cultivating.
The incident has raised concern among conservationists, local leaders, and wildlife authorities over the impact of farming activities on wildlife within the Amboseli ecosystem. The Kenya Wildlife Service also warned that the contamination could have wider consequences because livestock also graze in the area. Wildlife authorities said the toxic substances found in the deceased elephants pose no immediate threat to human health.
Prof. Kanga said the agency has since contained the situation but warned communities living around Amboseli National Park and neighboring wildlife conservancies to exercise caution when using pesticides and other agricultural chemicals.
