Finn's Take· TL;DROxygen — the element that sustains nearly all multicellular life on Earth — is disappearing from the world's aquatic ecosystems, and scientists warn that this rapidly escalating, human-driven crisis threatens to upend the biosphere. It is a slow-motion emergency unfolding beneath the surface, largely invisible to the billions of people whose lives and food supplies depend on healthy oceans.
A new review paper led by scientists at UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography warns that the rapid loss of oxygen from the ocean and other aquatic ecosystems is pushing Earth toward an "unsafe space," with consequences that could be irreversible on human timescales. The study was published June 30, 2026, in the journal Limnology and Oceanography.
The ocean has already lost roughly 2% of its dissolved oxygen since the 1950s, and scientists expect it to lose another 1% to 7% by the end of the century, according to Copernicus, the European Union's Earth observation program. Those numbers may sound small, but in a finely balanced global system, they carry enormous weight.
As carbon emissions drive up Earth's average temperature, oceans, lakes, rivers, and other aquatic ecosystems are warming. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water because the higher the temperature, the less soluble oxygen becomes. At the same time, warm surface layers prevent oxygen from mixing into deeper waters. The result is a compounding problem with no easy off switch.
Areas with excess nutrient input to the ocean also increase deoxygenation. The resulting algal blooms are subject to decay by microbes which consume oxygen, causing hypoxia and generating coastal dead zones, such as in the Gulf of Mexico. Every summer, an area roughly the size of Connecticut becomes essentially uninhabitable for marine life in the Gulf of Mexico — a hypoxic zone where oxygen levels drop below 2 milligrams per liter, forming near the Mississippi River delta due to nutrient runoff from agricultural fertilizers upstream.
The paper argues that aquatic deoxygenation should be added to the Planetary Boundaries framework — first introduced by a group of 28 internationally renowned scientists in 2009, which identifies nine ways that humanity is pushing crucial processes that maintain Earth's stability and resilience past their limits. The existing nine boundaries include climate change, ocean acidification, and biodiversity loss. Researchers say oxygen loss is deeply intertwined with all of them.
Lead author Erica Ferrer, a Scripps alumna and postdoctoral scholar at UC Santa Barbara, explained: "The health and stability of our planet depend on the health and stability of aquatic ecosystems, which need oxygen to function normally." Scientists warn that this widespread deoxygenation is closely connected to other major planetary threats, including warming, pollution, biodiversity loss, and ocean acidification.
Oxygen deficiency is predicted to worsen in estuaries, coastal areas, and oxygen minimum zones in the open ocean; habitat loss is expected to worsen, leading to vertical and horizontal migration of species; and lower oxygen concentrations are projected to result in a decrease in reproductive capacity and biodiversity loss, along with important local decreases of commercially important species and aquaculture production.
Anoxia — the near-total absence of oxygen — can promote the formation of nitrous oxide, and acidifying dead organic matter can stimulate the formation of methane, which can ultimately be released to the atmosphere. Both are powerful greenhouse gases equivalent to many times the heat-trapping ability of carbon dioxide. In other words, dying oceans don't just suffer — they can actively accelerate the very warming that is killing them.
Some of the resulting changes could persist for centuries and may not be reversible within human lifetimes. That long shadow is precisely why researchers are pushing for deoxygenation to be formally recognized as a planetary emergency. The science is now clear: the ocean's slow suffocation is not a distant, abstract threat. It is a present-tense crisis — and the window to act is narrowing.
