Anthony police arrested 22-year-old boxer Kayla Gomez after officers say a family gathering in Anthony, Texas, escalated into a physical assault on July 4. Anthony police officers responded to a reported assault around 3:26 p.m. at a home in the 600 block of Celeste Street, where upon arriving, officers made contact with the alleged victim, who told investigators the altercation began after a disagreement over decorations for Gomez's daughter's celebration. A dispute over how to decorate a child's party somehow spiraled into a brutal physical confrontation between two family members.

According to the affidavit, the victim told police Gomez punched her multiple times in the face with closed fists. The victim said she was unable to recall exactly how many times she was struck because she lost consciousness and "blacked out." The victim said once she gained consciousness, she saw family members trying to stop Gomez from trying to continue to assault. According to documents, the victim had an injury on her mouth and felt discomfort on both sides of her face. The victim was evaluated by emergency medical personnel at the scene but declined transportation to a hospital. Witnesses at the gathering identified Gomez as the primary aggressor in the altercation, and the victim signed a prosecution affidavit requesting that charges be pursued.

Based on the investigation, Gomez was arrested on a charge of Assault Causing Bodily Injury – Family Violence and booked into the El Paso County Jail on a $2,500 bond. According to El Paso County Jail records, Gomez was released on July 5 with a surety bond posted.
