Florida Paramedic Who Spent His Life Saving Others Made One Final Rescue

The family of Clifton "Cliffy" Murphy, a Marion County Fire Rescue paramedic, is speaking out about his life, his resilience through personal tragedy, and the legacy of saving lives that he leaves behind. His story is one that resonates far beyond the fire stations and emergency rooms of Ocala, Florida — it is a story about what it truly means to give everything you have, right up until the very end.

Murphy, known to his colleagues as a dedicated first responder and to his family as "Cliffy," went into cardiac arrest on August 27 and passed away on September 1. He was hospitalized and treated by paramedics, physicians, and nurses, but his condition did not improve. The cruel irony was not lost on those who knew him — a man who had spent his career responding to emergencies now needed the same care he had given so many others.

A Family's Impossible Decision

His family decided to end life-support measures on September 1 and chose to donate his organs, allowing Murphy to help others after his death. In keeping with his lifelong spirit of service, the family made the decision to honor his memory through organ donation. For the people who knew Cliffy best, the choice felt less like a decision and more like a reflection of who he always was.

"He always kept a solid head for me, he was always my rock," said Cody Murphy, Clifton's youngest brother. "I had a lot of breakdown moments, but he never broke down. He never wavered. He was always solid for me." That steadiness, his family says, was not just a personality trait — it was forged through hardship. Following the passing of his partner Tara, Clifton focused on raising their daughter, Maddie, with the help of his family. The family would later endure other heavy losses. Through the hardships, Clifton found strength in his purpose: raising his daughter and helping those in need.

An Honor Walk Through the Halls of AdventHealth

First responders and hospital staff lined the halls of AdventHealth Ocala on September 1 for an Honor Walk as Murphy was taken into surgery. Officials said the honor walk was meant to make sure his final journey was "marked with dignity, respect, and honor." An honor walk is a ceremonial event to commemorate a patient whose organs are donated, and it normally takes place as the patient is transported to an operating room prior to organ procurement.

Cody Murphy said the family was able to spend those precious final moments with Clifton, free of the medical equipment that had filled his room. "We got one more look at what our Cliffy was without all the tubes and monitors, and we held his hand as we wished him farewell to Tara," Cody Murphy said. The moment was heartbreaking and beautiful in equal measure — a final goodbye wrapped in love and the knowledge that Cliffy's story wasn't entirely over.

A Legacy That Lives On

As of 2022, over 100,000 people are on the national organ transplant waiting list in the United States, with 17 people dying per day waiting for a transplant. An individual donor can provide up to eight organs. Murphy's decision — and his family's courage in honoring it — means that multiple people may now have a second chance at life because of him.

Clifton channeled his passion into his studies, eventually joining Marion County Fire Rescue as a paramedic, where he served his community daily. He spent his career running toward crisis, and even in death, he kept running toward it. Cliffy Murphy's story is a reminder that the most extraordinary acts of generosity sometimes come from ordinary people who simply decided, over and over again, to show up for others — and never stopped.
