Finn's Take· TL;DRTwenty years after Hannah Montana premiered to a record-breaking 5.4 million viewers on Disney Channel , Miley Cyrus is stepping back into her blonde wig for a nostalgic celebration that promises to be as emotional as it is entertaining. The "Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special" streams March 24 on Disney+ and Hulu , marking exactly two decades since the show that transformed a 13-year-old Nashville girl into one of the world's biggest pop stars.
Cyrus once shed her Disney-clean image, but she has now returned to her golden-blond roots to "reclaim" Hannah Montana. "A lot of artists feel like to become the next version of themselves, they have to leave something behind," Cyrus says. "But I'd rather be more like a gorgeous patchwork blanket. I'd rather take every little piece of all the things that I've been and create a mosaic of exactly who I am now — not trashing any of that past but allowing it to come with me."
The original series holds the record for most viewed Disney Channel teen sitcom episode with 10.7 million viewers in August 2007, and remains the Disney Channel original series with the most episodes on the most-watched list . Demonstrating the franchise's enduring popularity, the Hannah Montana catalog has amassed more than half a billion hours streamed globally on Disney+ to date .
The special features a sit-down interview between Miley and Hannah Montana superfan Alex Cooper (host of "Call Her Daddy"), along with recreated sets from the show, a performance of "The Best of Both Worlds," and emotional chats with Miley's mom, Tish Cyrus, and her dad and Hannah Montana costar, Billy Ray Cyrus . Billy Ray Cyrus reunites with Cyrus in a replica of the Stewart family living room, where the two recount stories from the audition process .
Billy Ray's role in landing the show has become family legend: "My dad always says, 'When you knock 'em out, you don't need a judge.' We knocked 'em out," remembers Cyrus. "It was so obvious, after all the other dads, that you can't fake the kind of connection that we have. The inside jokes, the nicknames, the handshakes, singing the songs together. It was a TKO."
At a taping of the special, Cyrus embodied Hannah Montana on a stage that resembled the show's title sequence. She wore a sparkling black dress and styled her hair in blond bangs like Hannah's—no, that's not a wig! In front of an audience of 215 people, Cyrus performed "This Is the Life," "The Climb," and "The Best of Both Worlds." She also has a new, original song that will appear in the special .
After "Hannah Montana" ended, Cyrus forged her own career, becoming the chart-topping, chameleonic singer-songwriter behind "Wrecking Ball," "Party in the U.S.A." and the Grammy-winning "Flowers." At 33, she's one of the most accomplished and, for a long time, scrutinized artists of her generation . The original Hannah Montana soundtrack was the first TV soundtrack to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, with eight singles from the album charting on the Billboard Hot 100 .
"Hannah Montana will always be a part of who I am. What started as a TV show became a shared experience that shaped my life and the lives of so many fans, and I'll always be thankful for that connection," Cyrus said. "The fact that it still means so much to people all these years later is something I'm very proud of. This 'Hannahversary' is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who've stood by me for 20 years."
"There were times where Hannah Montana felt like the Beatles or something," Cyrus says. (Indeed, an entire section of the doc is devoted to girls shrieking at the top of their lungs.) The show's impact extended far beyond television screens, spawning concerts that sold out 71 arenas and generating merchandise that defined a generation's childhood.
"'Hannah Montana' opened the door for so many fans to dream big, sing loud, and embrace every side of themselves, which is why its legacy continues to shine across generations," said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. "Partnering with Miley on this special is a dream, and we want it to be a love letter to the fans, who remain as passionate today as they were when the series debuted almost 20 years ago."
For fans who grew up believing they could have the best of both worlds, this anniversary special represents more than nostalgia—it's validation that the dreams
