Harris County Judge Stripped of Rodeo Leadership Role After VIP Access Dispute

Confrontation Over Premium Seating

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo was removed from RodeoHouston during a sold-out Megan Moroney concert after a confrontation with security over access to a premium seating area , sparking a public feud that has escalated into political controversy. As county judge, Hidalgo held the title of Ex-Officio Director of the Rodeo — a role she cited as the basis for her belief that she had access to the event's premium "dirt" area, also known as the chute seats, which are priced at $425 each .

When she attempted to enter the chute area, rodeo staff told her she needed a wristband — something she said had never been required of her before. "I have always been allowed on the dirt based on the county's relationship with the rodeo, regardless of wristband," Hidalgo wrote in a letter to HLSR Chairwoman . "Because the Megan Moroney concert was sold out and she'd already had chute seats several times prior, we had multiple conversations with members of her team and the Houston County Sports and Convention Corporation informing them that she did not have wristbands and was not authorized to access the dirt or chute area that evening," the letter read .

Hidalgo said she attended the concert with several guests, including a fellow elected official and her two children, and the parents of recently deceased U.S. Air Force First Sgt. David Saravia, who died Dec. 31 at age 29. Hidalgo said it was the first public event the family had attended since their son's death .

Escalation and Removal

Hidalgo said that when she disputed the order and waited to talk to the director, she was "physically shoved and threatened with arrest" by security. "They took to physically grabbing and pushing the County Executive of the third largest county in the nation," she continued . In social media posts, Hidalgo identified John Presley as the HLSR head of security and said he escorted her out of the stadium and to her vehicle .

Late Wednesday, Hidalgo released two videos and two audio recordings of the incident on social media, in which she can be heard pleading with security not to remove the children from the venue . "As chairwoman of the board, the idea that she was treated this way because she's a woman or Hispanic is absolutely false and insulting" , rodeo officials responded.

Costly Privileges Revealed

Judge Lina Hidalgo has attended the 2026 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on three occasions prior to March 10, each time with wristbands provided by the Rodeo for her and her guests to watch from the chute seats. In total, 21 tickets were provided to her across those visits, including for the J Balvin, Dwight Yoakam and Luke Bryan concerts with a total value of close to $9,000 .

Hidalgo is the only local elected official to request exclusive seats at the rodeo this year, according to the statement. The Judge is the only elected official to request, even demand, these seats night after night . We have paying guests who invest in that experience, and our volunteers and staff work hard to ensure those guests receive what they paid for. Tickets at any level have not been requested by any other elected official in Houston or Harris County this year .

Leadership Role Stripped

Thursday afternoon, she posted that she had received security footage from the rodeo but had not found "any relevant footage." Shortly after, she announced HLSR had voted to revoke her Ex-Officio Director status — the very role she had cited as the basis for her access . Per Rodeo, the status came with 1 gold personalized badge, 1 gold guest badge, 1 parking pass, all the privileges of the board except for voting .

Texas Senator Paul Bettencourt is calling for the resignation of Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo. Betancourt says Hidalgo's behavior was bizarre and argues she lacks the judgment needed as head of the county's Office of Emergency Management. He says the issue raises serious concerns about leadership in Harris County and may prompt a legislative action . The incident has highlighted questions about elected officials' expectations for special treatment at public events, particularly when taxpayer-owned venues are involved.
