A Sudden and Shocking Loss

The *Scream* and *Heroes* star died on Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina, at the age of 36. First responders were called to the scene after receiving a report of a woman in cardiac arrest. Police and EMS personnel responded to a report of an unresponsive woman at Judson Mill Lofts on Easley Bridge Road at 1:51 p.m. on Sunday, and Panettiere died at the scene. According to reports, paramedics gave Panettiere advanced cardiac life support, but it didn't work. She was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

In a statement from Panettiere's father, shared by her representative, he said: "It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen." The television and film performer, who would have turned 37 on Friday, had been open about her private battles and wrote at length about them in her memoir, *This Is Me*, which came out in May.

What Investigators Have Found So Far

An autopsy for Panettiere was completed by the Greenville County Coroner's Office on Monday. Coroner Mike Ellis confirmed Panettiere had no visible injuries or trauma; however, her official cause and manner of death are currently pending further testing. Her death is under investigation, but there were "not any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances," according to police.

In Greenville 911 dispatch audio surrounding Panettiere's death, responders can be heard discussing a possible "overdose" and noting that "CPR is in progress." An acquaintance of Panettiere placed the 911 call. Previously, the actress had shared that she struggled with alcoholism, opioid addiction, and postpartum depression. Though the reason for Panettiere's presence in Greenville is unknown, her *Nashville* co-star Charles Esten performed a leg of his Carolina Tour at The Foundry at Judson Mill on August 14 — a venue sharing the same address as the Judson Mill Lofts where she was found. Police have not confirmed if his performance was the reason for her presence in town.

A Life Lived in the Public Eye

Panettiere had become a fixture of early-2000s pop culture, earning acclaim for performances in *Heroes* and *Nashville* — which earned her two Golden Globe nominations — while quietly carrying the weight of expectations that came with being Hollywood's "It girl." One month before her death, Panettiere told Fox News Digital she was looking toward the future and had a long list of things she still hoped to accomplish. She said at the time that she was "doing great" after years of struggles she had chronicled in her memoir.

Panettiere published a memoir in May called *This Is Me: A Reckoning*, in which she detailed her childhood, time in the limelight, and struggles with alcohol, opioids, and postpartum depression. She also shared the impact of her struggles on her relationship with her daughter and her partner, former Ukrainian boxing world champion Wladimir Klitschko, and said the book's purpose was to help others overcome their own obstacles and "make them feel like they're not so alone." Her death comes just three years after the loss of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who was found dead in his New York apartment at only 28, later revealed to have died from cardiomegaly — an enlarged heart — coupled with aortic valve complications.

What Comes Next

Police said the case remains under investigation by the Greenville Police Department in conjunction with the Greenville County Coroner's Office. Toxicology results, which typically take weeks to months to process, will be critical in determining an official cause of death. Until those results are returned, the full picture of what happened on August 16 remains incomplete.

In her memoir, Panettiere described herself as an "optimist to the core" who refused to be defined by tragedy. "Life is a process that evolves day by day, year by year and — like it or not — you are engaged in a cycle of growth until the moment you take your last breath," she wrote. Those words, written just months before her death, now carry a weight she never could have anticipated. As investigators work toward answers, the world is left grappling with the loss of a talent who had only just begun telling her own story on her own terms.
