Finn's Take· TL;DRBy 2019, Adam Bird weighed over 400 pounds and developed blood clots in the tibial vein of his right calf, describing the pain as "like getting stabbed with a hot poker constantly." The pain and swelling limited his mobility so severely he had to stop working, with doctors warning he may never walk normally again. In late 2019, the 30-year-old Texas electrician hit rock bottom: "I'd lost everything. I lost my job. I lost my apartment. I lost the independence I had gained," forcing him to move in with his uncle.
Bird had struggled with weight since childhood, already weighing 200 pounds by age 12. When his father died from blood clots following brain surgery at 19, and his mother began having strokes, Bird became a full-time caretaker for seven years, neglecting his own health. Consumed by pain, depression, and fear that blood clots would kill him, Bird even struggled with suicidal thoughts.
Everything changed when his uncle, a cancer survivor, shared a life-altering analogy about life being like a sailboat: "You can only focus on the things you have control over," which sparked Bird's realization that "What I did have control over was the decision to fight for my life."
Despite never having been to a gym before, Bird started exercising in old hiking boots until the gym owner approached him with a gift of new running shoes and workout clothes. When Bird offered to repay him, the owner simply said to "help someone else and pay it forward," teaching Bird to recognize goodness in others and accept help, which "motivated me to work harder." When Bird decided to walk 2.5 miles to and from the gym, a fellow member gave him a reflective vest for safety, proving "A good community can make such an incredible difference."
Bird found a nutritionist through his gym who taught him "what food could do for me, besides taste good," leading him to fuel his body with complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats, including eggs, chicken, salmon, oats, and sweet potatoes. He switched from long periods between meals that triggered hunger and overeating to eating five meals a day to support his metabolism.
Every day, Bird would stop by Smoothie King next to his gym for a banana smoothie with extra chocolate protein, extra almond butter, dates and cinnamon, sometimes using the high-protein, high-fiber drink as a meal that "gave me the nutrition I needed to stay consistent." Over time, he grew closer to the employees, and "Smoothie King started to become a part of my community too."
After six months, Bird lost nearly 100 pounds, and over the next two years lost 100 more pounds, totaling 200 pounds lost—half his heaviest weight. The blood clots in his legs eventually disappeared with blood thinners and lifestyle changes, with doctors telling him his "veins looked like a different person's veins" and that he had "improved my odds of not having another blood clot considerably and added years to my life."
However, Bird faced a new challenge with excess skin that would chafe, causing rashes and infections, requiring him to lift his skin and use a hair dryer after sweating or showering, but skin removal surgery wasn't covered by insurance. His aunt and uncle offered to pay, and in 2023, Bird had two surgeries to remove nearly 15 pounds of skin from his abdomen, arms, and thighs.
Bird returned to work as an electrician, doing twice the job he used to do with his new energy, got into a relationship, married, and welcomed a baby boy in January, saying "I never thought I'd be able to have a girlfriend, and here I am with this beautiful woman, living life to the fullest." The changes have become his normal lifestyle, making weight maintenance easy while he continues cardio, weight lifting, and cooking healthy meals with his wife.
