Apple Names Hardware Chief John Ternus as New CEO to Replace Tim Cook

Apple announced on Monday that John Ternus will become its new CEO on September 1, 2026, taking over from Tim Cook who will transition to executive chairman of the board . This succession will end Cook's 15-year run as one of the most successful tech company leaders in modern history . Ternus, the company's 51-year-old senior vice president of hardware engineering, has been named as CEO Tim Cook's successor . At 51, Ternus mirrors Cook's age when he became CEO in 2011, positioning him for potentially a decade or more of leadership . As executive chairman, Cook will assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world .

Under Cook's stewardship, Apple shares appreciated more than 1,700% and Apple's market value is currently more than $4 trillion, making it the third most valuable public company in the world . From Swimming Pool to Silicon Valley

Ternus studied mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, competed on the varsity swim team, and graduated in 1997. After briefly designing virtual-reality headsets at a small firm called Virtual Research Systems, he joined Apple's product design team in 2001 . During a commencement speech at the University of Pennsylvania's engineering school in 2024, Ternus described his first day at the tech company as "exhilarating and intimidating," saying "I wasn't sure I belonged there" .

By 2013, he was vice president of hardware engineering. In 2021, when his predecessor Dan Riccio stepped aside to oversee what would become the Vision Pro, Ternus was promoted to senior vice president, making him the youngest member of Apple's executive team . Ternus earned increased visibility at product launches, becoming a regular presenter at Apple's keynote events, revealing refreshes of the iMac and MacBook Pro, and crucially unveiling Apple silicon to the world .

During his keynote address at Penn in 2024, Ternus recounted arguing with a supplier over the number of grooves in screws for his first Apple product, the Apple Cinema Display, saying "It's right because I'd already spent months working on that product, and if you're going to spend that much time on something, you should put in your very best effort" .

Major Challenges Ahead

For Ternus, perhaps the most critical aspect of his new job will be pushing the company deeper into artificial intelligence, where it's lagged many of its megacap peers. Apple has faced criticism from investors and technologists for a perceived lack of cutting-edge AI technology .
