A New Scar on the Lunar Surface

The defunct upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket crashed uncontrolled into the moon on Aug. 5 at an estimated 5,400 mph. It was a violent, silent collision — no one saw it happen in real time, and the moon certainly didn't feel a thing. But two weeks later, NASA has the receipts. NASA released new images of the crash site taken by its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter on Aug. 11 and 12, giving scientists — and the public — their first clear look at the fresh wound left on the lunar surface.

The new images show a crater measuring about 60 feet across and less than 10 feet deep, according to NASA. Bright and dark rays extend outward from the crater, offering scientists clues about what was churned up by the high-speed collision. Dark and bright streaks are clearly visible, emanating like butterfly wings from the crater. The darker lines represent excavated material that was close to the surface and shaped by eons of solar wind, cosmic rays, and micrometeorite strikes, while the brighter rays indicate fresh rocks and dirt hurled from farther down.

A Year-Long Journey to Destruction

The crater formed on Aug. 5, when a SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage impacted the surface following its January 2025 launch of the Firefly Blue Ghost 1 mission. The spacecraft, weighing approximately 8,600 pounds, had delivered two lunar rovers — Blue Ghost-1 and Hakuto-R Mission 2 — and was then abandoned in a Moon-crossing high Earth orbit. With no fuel left and no way to steer it back into Earth's atmosphere for a controlled burn-up, the booster simply drifted until gravity did what gravity does.

The rocket stage struck near the Einstein Crater on the far side of the moon at 5,400 mph. The rocket, which was about 45 feet long and 12 feet wide, crashed with a force of nearly 3 tons of TNT. Getting photos of the aftermath was no easy feat. Engineers tilted the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter so its cameras would point toward the crater each time it passed about 60 miles above the moon, traveling 1 mile per second. The orbiter circles the moon from pole to pole every two hours, while the moon slowly rotates underneath it — and photographing a specific spot required waiting six days for that location to come into view.

Science Hiding in the Wreckage

Scientists had predicted the Falcon 9 impact would create a crater roughly 65 to 100 feet wide and about 16 feet deep. NASA's measurements now show the actual crater is somewhat shallower than predicted and near the low end of the expected width range. That gap between prediction and reality is itself valuable data. NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies used the event to test techniques for predicting where an object would strike the lunar surface, and those calculations placed the eventual impact site within about 0.6 miles of the predicted location.

South Korea's Danuri lunar orbiter photographed the crater just hours after the collision and then provided coordinates that helped the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter team refine its own observations. Meanwhile, the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile detected the impact, confirming "spectral lines of sodium and lithium gas in the impact plume lasting for 5-10 minutes after impact." The sodium likely originated from the lunar soil, while the lithium could have come from the rocket itself.

A Warning Shot for the New Space Race

This is humanity's third known unintentional lunar impact of a rocket body, the first being the third stage that delivered Luna 2, and the second being the upper stage of China's Chang'e 5-T1 mission. The Falcon 9 crash was not intentional, but NASA said lunar-surface impacts are actually an "accepted and safe" method of disposing of hardware. That framing, however, is drawing scrutiny as lunar ambitions grow.

The incident underscores the growing challenge of space junk as global agencies and private companies accelerate lunar exploration. Experts warn that without improved tracking and international disposal regulations, future missions face heightened collision risks, potential contamination of lunar sites, and disturbance of historical locations. The concern rises as NASA and other world space agencies, as well as commercial interests, begin to increase the pace on establishing sustainable facilities for astronauts to live and work on the lunar surface. A 60-foot crater in the middle of nowhere is a curiosity today. The same kind of uncontrolled crash near a future lunar outpost would be something else entirely.
