Finn's Take· TL;DRCleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden was arrested early Saturday morning in Houston and has been charged with a misdemeanor unlawful carrying of a weapon. According to Harris County court records, Harden was taken into custody at 3:41 a.m. when a handgun was observed on the seat of a car Harden owns. A spokesperson for the Houston Police Department tells TMZ he was pulled over at 1800 Crawford Street for a traffic violation.
The gun was not holstered and was in plain view, per the records. The Cleveland Cavalier allegedly had his gun "in plain view" in his vehicle without a holster. Sources tell Lewis that Harden and a large group of friends were at a hookah lounge before the arrest. The 37-year-old veteran guard has deep ties to Houston, where he spent some of his most successful NBA seasons with the Rockets.
Harden was booked at 4:57 a.m. and later released after paying a $100 bond. According to US Legal Forms, an unsecured bond means a defendant can be released from custody without paying the bail. Instead, they'd have to appear in court as required, but they're liable for the bail if they don't appear.
His bond terms ban him from possessing any firearms, ammunition, or other weapons, and from using, possessing, or consuming any alcohol, controlled substance, dangerous drug, or marijuana unless prescribed by a doc. And, he must submit to random urinalysis. His arraignment is scheduled for June 22, according to the clerk's office website.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are aware of the arrest of James Harden this morning and are in the process of gathering additional information. We are in contact with James and his representation and will continue to monitor developments as they become available. At this time, we will have no further comment.
The guard joined the Cavaliers ahead of the 2026 NBA trade deadline. In 26 regular-season games with Cleveland last year, Harden averaged 20.5 points, 4.8 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game. The veteran guard has a player option for the 2026-2027 season, but is expected to explore an extension with the Cavaliers this offseason.
The timing of this arrest could complicate Harden's contract negotiations with Cleveland. Harden, Donovan Mitchell and the Cavaliers each expressed interest in continuing their working relationship after the team was eliminated by the Knicks. While the misdemeanor charge is relatively minor in legal terms, it adds uncertainty to what was expected to be a straightforward contract discussion.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges professional athletes face regarding personal conduct and legal compliance. For Harden, who has built a reputation as one of the NBA's elite scorers over his 15-year career, this arrest represents an unwelcome distraction as he enters what could be the final years of his playing career. The court date on June 22 will determine how this situation unfolds and whether it impacts his standing with the Cavaliers organization.
