The highly contagious H5N1 strain has carved a destructive path across the globe since first appearing in Europe in 2020, and has infected mammals too, including foxes, polar bears, tigers, sea lions, and even, on rare occasions, humans. The virulent strain has spread through wild bird and mammal populations since 2021, killing millions and infecting poultry and dairy farms as well as some farmworkers. New Zealand had watched the carnage unfold from a distance. Now, it was no longer a spectator.
One of the last large landmasses to be inhabited by humans, New Zealand's isolated islands had no predatory mammals for millions of years — a bird's paradise that gifted the country a raft of striking unique species, from the kākāpō, a cheeky flightless and nocturnal parrot, to the takahē, a colorful, almost dinosaur-looking, ground-dwelling creature.
New Zealand's wild birds are unusually vulnerable because they evolved for millions of years without native land mammals, leaving many species flightless, ground-nesting, and poorly equipped to defend themselves. To put that in perspective, it took 16 years from the start of the kākāpō recovery programme to produce 90 chicks — a milestone that no one wants to see erased by a virus.
Last year, New Zealand's Department of Conservation completed a world-first research trial on five native bird species that showed vaccination is safe and effective in these birds. The country has also been preparing on the agricultural front, working with the poultry industry to develop biosecurity and resilience plans, with Hoggard noting they would be doing more surveillance and testing going forward. For now, there is no evidence of mass mortality in wildlife or transmission between wild birds in New Zealand, and there has been no detection in poultry.
No one yet knows just how New Zealand's native birds will fare if a mass outbreak occurs. The government's swift action reflects a hard-learned global lesson: once H5N1 takes hold in a wildlife population, it is nearly impossible to contain. For species like the kākāpō — which number fewer than 250 individuals — a single outbreak could be catastrophic. New Zealand's conservation teams say they are in a unique position to vaccinate some of the most vulnerable birds as a precaution, having witnessed the devastating impacts of this virus on wildlife in other parts of the world.
What New Zealand is attempting is a blueprint that the rest of the world will be watching closely.
