Finn's Take· TL;DRMonteney Hoyt and Nehemiah Costley, both of Killeen, were arrested without incident Tuesday, according to a news release from Chief Michael Hatton of the Nolanville Police Department Wednesday morning. Members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, with assistance from the Nolanville Police Department, McLennan County Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Waco Police Department, Office of Inspector General and Coryell County Sheriff's Office, apprehended both suspects in Killeen without incident.
Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Sedell Barrios, 19, of Harker Heights in March. The shooting happened on Interstate 14 in Nolanville when gunfire erupted from one vehicle aiming at another on the highway. Authorities later determined the victims were shot while driving east on Interstate 14, by someone from another vehicle driving in the same direction.
These arrests are following an extensive investigation conducted jointly by the Nolanville Police Department and the Texas Rangers. Additionally, search warrants were obtained for two residences, one in Killeen and one in Harker Heights, which were connected to the suspects. These warrants were executed by the Nolanville Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety Special Operations Group.
The investigation represents a significant development in a case that shocked the Central Texas community. Barrios succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital on March 22. Police reported a second 19-year-old man was also struck and was transferred to Baylor, Scott and White Medical Center in Temple for further medical care.
Since the shooting, Barrios' family has set up a GoFundMe account to help with expenses. As of noon Wednesday, the account had reached $18,575 toward a goal of $20,000. The fundraising effort demonstrates how the tragedy has resonated throughout the community, with friends and strangers alike contributing to support the grieving family.
What still remains unclear is whether the victims or suspects knew each other, a question the authorities have yet to answer. "This investigation involved the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies working together to bring those responsible into custody safely," Hatton said.
According to Hatton, the investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available, and as investigative integrity allows. The arrests mark a crucial step forward, but many details about the motive and circumstances surrounding the highway shooting remain under investigation.
This case highlights the dangers of highway violence and the importance of multi-agency cooperation in solving complex crimes. Anyone with information related to this case is encouraged to contact the Nolanville Police Department. As the legal process moves forward, the community continues to seek answers about what led to this tragic loss of life on what should have been a routine drive down Interstate 14.
