A Child Lost, A Father Charged

Marquise Anderson, 35, has been charged with capital murder of a person under 10 years old, months after his daughter, 9-year-old Joanna Shoulder, died of extensive blunt force injuries. The case has shaken the Fort Worth community and drawn national attention for the deeply disturbing details contained in the arrest affidavit — details that paint a harrowing picture of Joanna's final hours.

Fort Worth Police announced Wednesday that Anderson was arrested on Tuesday afternoon, about a week after the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office ruled that his daughter's death was a homicide caused by extensive blunt force injuries throughout her body. On June 16, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office ruled that Joanna's manner of death was homicide. That ruling set the formal arrest in motion.

What Happened on the Night of February 8

According to Fort Worth Police, on February 8, officers were sent to a residence on the 1900 block of Daniel Street at about 3:15 a.m. and arrived to find CPR being given to a 9-year-old girl lying on the floor. The child was taken to the hospital by paramedics, where she later died. Police said the attending physician told investigators that the girl, identified as Joanna Jordyn Shoulder, appeared to have extensive bruising all over her body.

When police spoke to Anderson, he said Joanna had wet the bed twice that night, and after the second incident, he put her in the bathtub for three hours to clean her up. Police said Anderson admitted that he spanked Joanna, and after she purportedly smirked at him, he then allegedly admitted to beating her with a belt that had a metal buckle. According to the affidavit, he hit her with the blue cloth belt with a metal buckle 6–7 times because he said she smirked at him and that he didn't think the previous discipline had been effective.

The beating left at least 30 bruises on Joanna's torso and legs, and a belt pattern was present among the injuries, according to the assessment of a pathologist described in the affidavit. Her condition deteriorated as Anderson said Joanna became "sleepy, thirsty, hot, and slurred her speech." She then collapsed and started to vomit, and Anderson called 911. According to the affidavit, police said Anderson gave them several explanations for injuries to his daughter's head, including that she hit her head on the faucet when she fell and that she struck both sides of her head when he pulled her from the tub.

Medical Findings and the Case Against Anderson

Police said records from Cook Children's Medical Center showed Joanna arrived at the hospital in cardiac arrest, and doctors documented multiple bruises on Joanna's back, thighs, lower extremities, and flank, including semi-circular bruising and a linear bruise on the thigh. Investigators said the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy said the injuries were consistent with the areas Anderson admitted striking and that a belt pattern was visible.

Joanna's biological mother was also interviewed, and she told police her daughter had no significant medical problems and was developing normally and was capable of bathing on her own. Police also said a woman who was in the house when first responders were called told them that Anderson had allegedly disciplined Joanna with a belt the day before she died.

What Anderson Now Faces

Anderson has been charged with capital murder of a person under the age of 10 and is being held in the Fort Worth Jail. A bond amount has not yet been set, and it is unclear if he has obtained an attorney to speak on his behalf. If convicted of capital murder, Anderson faces either life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

Joanna Shoulder was nine years old. She had her whole life ahead of her. As this case moves through the Texas court system, it will inevitably renew conversations about child safety, mandatory reporting, and the legal boundaries of parental discipline — questions that never get easier, but always demand answers.
