That's exactly what happened when paleontologists took a fresh look at a fossilized skull that had been sitting in a Danish museum collection since the 1800s, only to realize it belonged to a species no one had ever formally recognized.
The holotype skull of the newly named species was collected in the 19th century by Danish naturalist Peter Wilhelm Lund at the famous Lagoa Santa caves in Brazil. Catalogued as NHMD 2045557, the specimen was later examined by another Danish scientist, Johannes Reinhardt, who in 1875 classified it as *Schistopleurum euphractum*. That classification stuck — until now. For roughly 150 years, the skull gathered dust, its true identity unrecognized.
The newly named species, *Glyptotherium deuterophractum*, lived between 60,000 and 17,000 years ago in a swath of South America stretching from Brazil to Venezuela. The animal was a type of glyptodont — the extinct clade of giant, heavily armored relatives of modern armadillos, some of which grew to the size of a small car. Picture something like a living tank lumbering through ancient South American forests, and you're not far off.
In a new study, Dr. Vicente Oliveira and his co-authors compared the skull's cranial features as well as glyptodont teeth, ankle bones, and armor plates called osteoderms from Brazil and Venezuela with those of known glyptodont species from North and Central America — and concluded the Brazilian animal was distinct enough to warrant its own name. The species occurred in northeastern, southeastern, and northern Brazil, and its range extended into northern South America. That's a surprisingly broad geographic footprint for a creature that went entirely unnamed for so long.
Among the mammals of the Xenarthra clade known from the Brazilian Pleistocene, giant sloths and glyptodonts stand out in the fossil record, according to the research team. Yet even within such a well-studied group, an entire species slipped through the cracks of scientific classification for generations. The finding is a striking reminder of how much taxonomic work remains undone — not in remote dig sites, but in the archives of institutions we already have.
The discovery underscores how much remains to be learned from museum collections gathered generations ago, and how outdated taxonomic assumptions can obscure biodiversity that was, in effect, hiding in plain sight. Museums around the world hold millions of specimens catalogued under older, often imprecise classification systems. Modern analytical tools — from detailed morphological comparisons to digital imaging — are now allowing scientists to revisit those specimens with fresh eyes and far greater precision.
The researchers noted that the description of this new Brazilian glyptodontine species highlights the need for more detailed comparisons of Venezuelan and Brazilian materials with known *Glyptotherium* species. Their paper was published on August 15 in the *Journal of Mammalian Evolution*.
The story of *Glyptotherium deuterophractum* is ultimately a story about patience and perspective. A skull collected nearly two centuries ago, misidentified, shelved, and overlooked — now anchors an entirely new branch of the glyptodont family tree. As researchers continue revisiting old collections with modern methods, it's reasonable to expect more such surprises. The next undiscovered species may already be sitting on a museum shelf, waiting for someone to look a little closer.
