An Almost-Blood Moon Lights Up the Night Sky

It wasn't a total lunar eclipse — but for millions of skywatchers, it was close enough to be breathtaking. On August 27–28, 2026, a very deep partial lunar eclipse was visible from Europe, Africa, North America, and South America, with just over 96% of the moon passing into Earth's shadow. The result was a dramatic, rust-colored orb hanging in the night sky — not quite a Blood Moon, but stunning enough to stop people in their tracks.

Up to 96% of the moon slipped into Earth's dark shadow, creating an impressive "almost Blood Moon," with the eclipse reaching its maximum at 04:12 UTC on August 28 — that's 12:12 a.m. EDT and 9:12 p.m. PDT on August 27. At peak coverage, Earth's central core shadow — the umbra — covered up to 96% of the Earth-facing side of the moon, meaning almost the whole of the full moon displayed a rich, rusty red hue.

Why the Moon Turned Red

Most of the eclipsed portion appeared dark red, brown, or copper-colored. This happens because sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere before reaching the moon; the atmosphere filters out much of the blue light and bends redder light into Earth's shadow. It's the same phenomenon that makes sunrises and sunsets glow orange — only this time, it was the moon catching that filtered light from every sunrise and sunset happening simultaneously around the entire Earth.

Just how red or orange the near-totally eclipsed moon would appear was "hard to predict," according to Noah Petro, chief of the Planetary Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Lab at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The actual appearance depended partly on conditions in Earth's atmosphere — dust, aerosols, wildfire smoke, and volcanic material can all affect how much sunlight passes through and which wavelengths reach the moon. And because this was technically still a partial eclipse, the tiny uneclipsed section remained dramatically brighter than the reddish portion, creating a striking two-toned effect.

A Rare Opportunity for a Huge Audience

The August 27–28 event was the first deep partial lunar eclipse anywhere in the world since September 18, 2024, and the last until January 11–12, 2028 — when only 2.4% of the moon will be in Earth's umbral shadow. As such, the 2026 partial lunar eclipse was the most impressive lunar eclipse until a total lunar eclipse on December 31, 2028. That made Thursday night a genuinely rare window for casual observers and dedicated astronomers alike.

The Americas got the best overall view, while Europe and Africa saw the eclipse close to moonset. From start to finish, the eclipse lasted 339 minutes, and the moon was in Earth's dark shadow during the partial phases for 199 minutes. Unlike solar eclipses, no special glasses were needed — just clear skies and a willingness to stay up late or wake up early.

Part of an Extraordinary August for Astronomy

August 2026 proved to be a spectacular month for astronomy. Following the August 12 total solar eclipse across Spain — which gave viewers in the rest of Europe, the UK, and North America a beautiful partial solar eclipse, plus the peak of the Perseid meteor shower — the summer stargazing calendar culminated with this dramatic lunar event. Three major celestial events in a single month is extraordinarily rare, and the lunar eclipse served as a fitting finale.

The lunar eclipse coincided with August's full moon, known as the Sturgeon Moon — a nickname that originated in North America, marking the time of year when sturgeon fish were historically most plentiful in the Great Lakes. The next total lunar eclipse won't arrive until December 31, 2028 — January 1, 2029 — already being dubbed the New Year's Blood Moon Eclipse. For anyone who missed Thursday night's spectacle, that's the next date to mark on the calendar.
