What the Research Actually Found

Scientists previously theorized that the slip rate of the northern San Andreas would slow down further south along the fault, with one hypothesis being that slip was being transferred onto other faults along the way, such as the Calaveras or Hayward faults. But her research found that the slip rate — and therefore the likelihood of an earthquake — did not decrease but actually stayed the same from the North Coast section to the Santa Cruz Mountains section.

The rate appears to be constant over a 10,000-year window that researchers were able to document. That's a significant departure from what the scientific community had long assumed. This matters because faults that move faster can generally produce earthquakes more frequently. In other words, the risk of a major seismic event in this region is higher than existing models accounted for.

Blisniuk conducted fieldwork at Sanborn County Park in Saratoga, where she researched the terrain and rock formations within the park, where the San Andreas Fault runs directly underneath. The landscape itself, she explained, holds a geological record of past earthquakes — one that tells a story scientists are only now fully reading.

The Timing Could Not Be More Sobering

Just a week before this research came to light, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the Hayward Fault in Oakland — a stark reminder that the Bay Area sits atop a restless network of faults. Recent studies have also revealed that the southern section of the San Andreas Fault near Los Angeles sits at its highest stress level in 1,000 years. The new findings from Blisniuk's team add another layer of urgency to an already tense picture.

Historically, both the devastating 1989 Loma Prieta and 1906 San Francisco earthquakes happened along the San Andreas Fault zone. Those events reshaped California — and they serve as the clearest proof of what this fault is capable of. "So we do have historical earthquakes along this fault, and we will have them in the future," Blisniuk said.

Not a Surprise — Just New Data

Blisniuk was careful to frame the findings in their proper context. "I don't think the idea that the slip rates are constant along the San Andreas Fault, where we have studied, is a big surprise to a lot of people. We just didn't have that data before." That distinction matters — this isn't a discovery that the fault has suddenly changed behavior, but rather a clearer picture of what it has always been doing.

The research has not yet been published or peer-reviewed , so the scientific community will be watching closely as it moves toward formal scrutiny. Still, the implications are hard to ignore. "We know that we live on a plate boundary, and we are always surprised when we hear, 'Oh my gosh, an earthquake occurred in Japan or Colombia,' but we are going to have an earthquake in California, and we should be prepared," Blisniuk said. For millions of Californians living near the fault, that preparation — emergency kits, structural retrofits, awareness — remains the most actionable response to findings like these.
