A Landmark Study Cracks Open the Genetics of Personality

Are you the life of the party or a homebody who dreads small talk? Prone to anxiety, or famously easygoing? A sweeping new study published in Nature on September 2, 2026 suggests your DNA has more to say about that than scientists ever previously confirmed — and the implications stretch far beyond psychology.

An international team of researchers, led by Michigan State University Professor Ted Schwaba, found that more than 1,200 different genetic variants are associated with the Big Five personality traits and are linked to dozens of life outcomes. The study was led by the Revived Genomics of Personality Consortium and combined results from 46 different research cohorts around the world. The scale alone is staggering — and it's what makes these findings so credible.

What Are the Big Five, and What Did Researchers Find?

Human personality traits can be divided into five categories known as the Big Five: extraversion (including traits such as sociability, assertiveness, and energy level), agreeableness (compassion, respectfulness, and trust), conscientiousness (organization, productiveness, and responsibility), neuroticism (anxiety, depression, and volatility), and openness to experience (imagination, curiosity, and aesthetic sensitivity).

The researchers identified 1,260 lead genetic variants associated with personality, including 824 novel variants. To put that leap in perspective, the number of significant genetic locations increased from just 3 to 131 for conscientiousness, from 4 to 39 for agreeableness, from 8 to 126 for openness to experience, from 14 to 258 for extraversion, and from 224 to 703 for neuroticism. These aren't small gains — they represent a generational jump in scientific understanding.

The authors analyzed data from 46 cohorts comprising up to 1.14 million participants of European and African ancestry. Participants in each cohort provided a DNA sample and completed a questionnaire measuring the Big Five personality traits — traits that are relatively stable and habitual differences in how people think, feel, and act.

No Single "Personality Gene" — But Patterns Add Up

There is no single "personality gene," Schwaba emphasized. Personality traits are associated with many genetic variants, but even the largest effects of individual genetic variants are still very small. However, even though any individual genetic variant makes very little difference in personality, the effects of many variants together can be more sizable.

One of the study's most striking findings was how consistent these genetic patterns proved to be across vastly different populations. For example, the same variants linked to extraversion in a young adult in the Netherlands also predicted extraversion in an older adult retiree in the United States. Using methods that compared relatives to one another, the team also confirmed that these genetic links weren't actually a byproduct of shared upbringing. The study also found little evidence that people choose spouses who have similar personalities to their own.

Why This Matters Beyond the Lab

The genetic variants that predict personality also partially predict mental and physical health, longevity, education, career paths and outcomes, and even how people are perceived by close others. The connections are both fascinating and practical. Genetic variants associated with neuroticism predict more time spent in the hospital, which is relevant to physicians and health researchers, and variants associated with openness to experience are linked to income and switching jobs, which is relevant to vocational researchers.

The study found, for example, that common genetic variants linked to openness to experience predicted that a person would move to more cosmopolitan neighborhoods — and that living in those neighborhoods may reinforce and further shape that same trait. Nature and nurture, it turns out, are constantly in conversation with each other.

Despite these genetic associations, the researchers found that the environment still plays a major role in personality. Schwaba is clear that this research is an invitation, not a verdict. "Personality seems to be relevant nearly everywhere you look," he said, adding that he hopes the study will encourage many other scientists to incorporate personality traits into their fields of study. As genetic tools grow more powerful and datasets more diverse, the picture of what makes us who we are will only come into sharper focus.
