A Factory Unlike Anything the World Has Seen

SpaceX has announced that its planned semiconductor plant, expected to become the largest building in the world at more than 100 million square feet, will be built in Grimes, Texas, outside of Houston. The project, called Terafab, is a joint venture between SpaceX and Tesla — and its sheer scale is almost impossible to wrap your head around. The facility will span more than 100 million square feet — ten times the size of Giga Texas and 50 times the size of the Pentagon.

Elon Musk declared on X that "Terafab Texas will be the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far," adding, "And it will be stunningly beautiful." The project would be built in four phases, with a total projected investment of $119 billion, according to the company's state incentive application. The first phase alone is no small undertaking. SpaceX and Tesla are set to begin construction with an initial investment of $16.8 billion.

Why SpaceX and Tesla Are Building Their Own Chips

Terafab will produce chips optimized for edge computing and inference for use in hardware like Tesla's Optimus robots and self-driving Cybercabs, along with high-power chips designed for operating SpaceX's space-based data centers. The ambition behind the project is staggering — and the reasoning behind it is straightforward: demand has simply outpaced supply.

Musk noted that existing suppliers are expanding at a rate "much less than we would like," and said bluntly: "We either build the Terafab or we don't have the chips." SpaceX added that its and Tesla's combined demand for chips is expected to be in excess of the global supply, calling that "looming gulf between supply and demand" the core reason for Terafab's necessity. The facility would produce advanced chips capable of supporting 1 terawatt of computing capacity annually.

What This Means for Texas — and America

Located about 75 miles northwest of Houston and roughly 30 miles east of Texas A&M University, the project would transform Grimes County — a county of about 30,000 residents — into the center of one of the largest industrial operations in the country. The companies say the facility will employ at least 3,000 people from Grimes and nearby Brazos County.

Musk framed the project in patriotic terms, saying it is "bringing cutting-edge manufacturing to America, creating thousands of high-paying jobs in the Lone Star State and enabling us to produce AI chips at scale for use on Earth and in space." Renderings depict a symmetrical complex with glowing lights, backed by Texas grants, with hiring and construction already advancing.

Ambition Meets Reality

Not everyone is treating the announcement as a done deal. SpaceX's own S-1 IPO filing described Terafab as only a "general framework" with no binding commitments, no finalized IP split, and no obligation for either side to keep participating. Meanwhile, Samsung's Taylor, Texas fab is already in production on Tesla's AI5 chip, and Tesla signed a $16.5 billion deal with Samsung to build its next-generation AI6 chip. That means Terafab is a long-horizon bet, not an immediate fix for either company's chip needs.

That makes Terafab a much longer bet, tied to Musk's claim that his companies will eventually need more compute than the whole semiconductor industry can produce. Whether or not every phase of the project materializes as announced, the underlying premise is hard to argue with: the world is running out of AI chips fast, and whoever controls the supply chain for that compute will hold enormous power over the technologies that define the next decade. Terafab is Musk's bet that he — not Taiwan, not South Korea — will be the one holding that power.
