Small Town, Big Safety Recognition

When most people think of Texas safety rankings, sprawling suburbs around Dallas or Houston typically come to mind. But SafeWise has ranked the small community of Fair Oaks Ranch No. 5 on its recent list of towns unburdened by crime worries. This affluent community of roughly 10,600 residents sits just 27 miles from San Antonio on the corners of Bexar, Comal, and Kendall Counties , proving that safety doesn't require sacrificing proximity to major metropolitan amenities.

For its 2026 report, SafeWise factored in FBI-reported property and violent crime data for 343 cities, then adjusted it for population in order to fairly compare metros to rural and suburban towns. The methodology ensures smaller communities like Fair Oaks Ranch compete on equal footing with larger cities. The study also named Fair Oaks Ranch as the safest city in the Greater San Antonio area.

What makes this recognition particularly striking is Fair Oaks Ranch's emergence from relative obscurity. A residential community was established by Fair's family in the 1970s and the community was incorporated in 1988. The town was named for Ralph E. Fair, Sr, a successful oilman and rancher who used to operate a ranch that became the town.

Elite Company Among Texas Cities

Fair Oaks Ranch finds itself in prestigious company on the SafeWise list. The full top 10 includes: No. 1 — Trophy Club (Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington) No. 2 — Parker (Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington) No. 3 — Memorial Villages (Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land) No. 4 — Melissa (Dallas-Fort Worth) No. 5 — Fair Oaks Ranch (San Antonio-New Braunfels)

With the exception of Whitehouse and Lumberton, Texas' safest cities are all suburbs of Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, or San Antonio. This pattern reflects how well-planned suburban communities with strong local governance and community engagement tend to achieve lower crime rates. Property crime and violent crime have decreased for the last two years in a row in Memorial Villages and Fair Oaks Ranch.

The safety statistics are remarkable across Texas's safest cities. 1 murder was reported in Texas's 10 safest cities. 60% of the 10 safest cities reported zero robberies, and 50% reported zero rapes. These numbers demonstrate that exceptional safety isn't just possible but achievable in well-managed communities.

What Makes Fair Oaks Ranch Special

Fair Oaks Ranch's success stems from characteristics that many families find appealing. In the year of 2023, Fair Oaks Ranch, TX had a population of 10.6k people with a median age of 45.5 and a median household income of $168,309. The community attracts educated professionals, with 36.4% hold a bachelor's. Meanwhile, 27.7% went even further, earning a master's or doctorate.

Residents consistently praise the community's family-friendly atmosphere. "We were trying to find an area that was focused on residential. Trying to keep commercial out of it, more of a bedroom community catering to San Antonio with access to everything we need," Burtis explained. "It's a nice, quiet bedroom community and I can't imagine living anywhere else right now."

The town's police chief emphasizes community engagement as a key factor. "If you picture it as a basketball team, the 6th man on that team, our citizens are a big help to us," said Ojeda. Quick response times also matter: "We're in such a small, 13-mile radius city. We can pretty much get from our location to an actual call in less than six minutes," he added.

Looking Ahead

Fair Oaks Ranch represents a growing trend of small, well-planned communities that prioritize safety without sacrificing quality of life. Now home to roughly 10,000 people, the City of Fair Oaks Ranch is growing every year. "Some time in the 10 to 20 year horizon, we expect to be fully built out," said Huizenga.

As Texas continues to experience rapid population growth, Fair Oaks Ranch's model offers valuable lessons. The community proves that thoughtful planning, strong local governance, and engaged residents can create exceptionally safe environments even in a rapidly changing state. For families seeking both security and convenience, this small town's big safety achievement suggests that the best of both worlds remains achievable in modern Texas.
