Seventeen-year-old Moises Ponce Mendoza of Burlington, North Carolina, was admitted to the hospital on August 22 and died on August 31 after contracting Naegleria fowleri — an amoeba that causes a rare and nearly always fatal brain infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis.

According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, investigators determined that on August 13, Mendoza had splashed water on his face at a water feature outside El Futuro, a community-based mental health nonprofit in Durham County. It was a casual, unremarkable moment — the kind anyone might have on a warm summer day. It turned fatal.

The water feature in Durham is now cordoned off, covered in orange traffic cones and a keep-out sign. A nearby resident recalled that just weeks ago, children were in that little pond and waterfall every single day.

What the Investigation Found

Through interviews with the teen's family, the North Carolina Communicable Disease Branch identified several possible exposure locations, including an apartment complex pool in Orange County and the water feature at El Futuro in Durham County. Both facilities were immediately closed for investigation and sampling.

Only the water tested in the man-made creek came back positive for the deadly amoeba. Investigators also found algae growth around the pump systems. The NCDHHS report noted that while the investigation does not allow a conclusive determination of the exposure location, "the lack of effective disinfection, visible algal growth, and detection of non-viable N. fowleri from the water feature" support the conclusion that the Durham County location was the likely source.

The water feature was closed by the Durham County Department of Health on August 28, 2026, and subsequently tested positive for Naegleria fowleri at the CDC. It remains closed to the public. El Futuro said in a statement that its staff is heartbroken over the loss and remains committed to supporting Mendoza's family and the broader community, and that it will continue cooperating fully with public health officials as the investigation and permitting review continue.

How This Infection Works — and Why It's So Dangerous

Naegleria fowleri is found in warm freshwater, including ponds, lakes, and rivers, and it grows best in hotter water. The amoeba does not cause illness if swallowed, but can be fatal if water containing the amoeba is forced up the nose into the brain. That distinction is critical — and widely misunderstood.

Dr. Carl Williams, a state public health veterinarian, explained that any water entering a person's nasal passages could pose a risk. "It doesn't have to be that forceful," Williams said. "Anything that gets in your nose or your nasal passages and up into your nose could be a potential risk." The first symptoms include severe headache, nausea, vomiting, and fever, followed by stiff neck, seizures, and coma. Once symptoms start, the disease progresses rapidly and usually causes death within about five days.

The United States typically sees fewer than 10 cases of Naegleria fowleri infection a year, and only four people have survived it out of 167 reported cases between 1962 and 2024. Those numbers make it one of the most lethal infections known — a near-certain death sentence once it takes hold.

A Rare Threat With a Growing Warning

What makes this case especially alarming is where it happened. This wasn't a remote lake or a river in the backcountry. It was a decorative water feature at a community center — the kind of place families visit regularly without a second thought about safety. Dr. Williams was careful not to stoke panic, saying, "I don't want people to be afraid to go in the water, but I do think that people need to be aware that it is a possibility."

The lesson here isn't to avoid all water. It's to be aware that warm, stagnant, or poorly maintained water — even in urban, decorative settings — can harbor this organism. As summers grow hotter and water features become more common in public spaces, health officials may need to revisit the standards for testing and maintaining those installations before another family faces what the Mendoza family has endured.
