It has been a 27-year wait — and for millions of people across the continent, the payoff is nothing short of extraordinary. Today's event is also the first time totality has occurred anywhere on Earth in 28 months, as a fleeting daytime darkness falls across a narrow portion of the planet, revealing highly coveted views of the ethereal solar corona.
The path of totality crosses northern Russia, Greenland, and Iceland before sweeping across Spain and a small part of Portugal, bringing almost total darkness to about 15 million people. Only skywatchers inside this relatively narrow path — just 182 miles (293 kilometers) wide — will experience totality, where day briefly turns to twilight. For everyone else across a vast swath of the Northern Hemisphere, a partial eclipse is still a remarkable consolation prize.
The total eclipse is visible from the cities of A Coruña, Valencia, Zaragoza, Palma, and Bilbao, though both Madrid and Barcelona fall just outside the path of totality. Totality begins at roughly 18:27 GMT in western Spain — 8:27 p.m. local time — and lasts for up to 110 seconds, depending on the exact location. Some locations in Spain experience the eclipse in the late evening, offering the rare chance to see totality just before sunset.
One skywatching editor is currently aboard HX Expeditions' MS Spitsbergen exploring Greenland's dramatic coast, aiming to witness totality from Scoresby Sund, the world's largest and longest fjord system. Overall, about 980 million people — nearly one in eight worldwide — might see the sun at least partly covered, depending on weather conditions. For those in the United States, the best view is in Fairbanks, Alaska, where the eclipse reaches 37% totality, while Boston sees 16%, New York City about 9%, and Philadelphia just 7%.
Along the narrow path of totality, day briefly turns to twilight as the moon completely covers the sun, revealing its elusive outer atmosphere — the corona. The points of greatest duration and greatest eclipse will be just 45 km off the western coast of Iceland, where totality lasts 2 minutes and 18.21 seconds. Because the eclipse occurs about 2.2 days after perigee — the moon's closest point to Earth — the moon's apparent diameter is larger than usual, making for a particularly dramatic and complete cover of the sun's disk.
Scientists note that we are no longer in solar maximum — about a third of the way past the peak — meaning "the corona will still be far more active than during the 2017, 2019, and 2020 total solar eclipses, but much less so than 2024's," making the 2026 eclipse especially interesting. There is even an intriguing wildcard: during totality, the surface brightness of the sun's corona could outshine auroras nearby, but other parts of the sky away from the eclipse could host visible auroral structures, potentially giving observers in Greenland and Iceland a two-for-one celestial show.
Only during the brief moments of totality, when the moon completely blocks the sun's bright face, can viewers look directly at the eclipse without eye protection. Before and after totality, everyone observing must use eye protection to view the partial phases. Skipping this precaution risks serious, permanent eye damage — no eclipse is worth that.
This eclipse will be followed by two more European solar eclipses: on August 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse visible from Spain, northern Africa, and the Middle East, and on January 26, 2028, an annular eclipse visible from South America, Portugal, and Spain. Europe, it turns out, is entering a rare golden era of eclipse watching — but today's event, the one that broke a 27-year drought, will be the one people remember longest.
