For ten days in July 2026, the desert surrounding Fort Irwin, California, became a testing ground for what the U.S. Army believes future warfare may look like. Capstone 6 was the largest Project Convergence experiment conducted so far, and instead of testing every system under tightly controlled conditions, organizers allowed more operational freedom during the exercise.

Drones, Robots, and the Fog of Urban War

The simulated conflict followed days of combat, culminating as U.S. Bradley Fighting Vehicles raced toward the training city on the horizon with smoke deployed to conceal their movement. Assault forces gathered on the northern edge to storm the enemy stronghold, navigating enemy obstacles such as barbed wire, cars, and concrete blocks meant to slow the advance.

A little over an hour before assault forces breached the training city, Blackhorse drones were flying above, scouting the area. Inside a building, a unit commander asked a drone operator flying a Black Widow quadcopter to use it to assess vehicles pushing into the city. The drone could fly up to four kilometers away, extending the unit's view beyond what soldiers could see from the ground. But the drones' role shifted dramatically once the fighting moved indoors. While remotely piloted uncrewed aircraft proved advantageous for early surveillance operations, they were used only sparingly once the fighting moved into the city, occasionally flying above to scout positions, terrain, and movement. Soldiers said that the use cases for the drones had changed as the exercise went on, with the focus shifting toward the on-the-ground fight.

One ground robot, an uncrewed ground vehicle called the NOMAD, had been put to use outside the city limits earlier that morning, but it didn't see use in the assault. That gap between what a technology can do in a demo and what it actually does under combat conditions was precisely the point. A system that works perfectly during a manufacturer's demonstration may behave very differently after days of dust, heat, vibration, weak signals, exhausted operators, and enemy interference.

The Real Lesson: Don't Drown Soldiers in Gadgets

With approximately 10,000 participants on the ground experimenting with more than 90 technologies, concepts and formations , the exercise could easily have become a chaotic showcase of hardware. Army leadership was deliberate about avoiding that trap. As Brig. Gen. Daniel Hibner, head of the Army Joint Modernization Command, put it: "What we really want to be able to do is not just saturate the environment with a bunch of technology" because "that becomes so distracting" that soldiers can't train efficiently and effectively.

The central focus of the exercise was the continued validation of the Next Generation Command and Control architecture, designed to ensure U.S. and allied forces can achieve and maintain decision dominance in complex, high-threat environments. The equipment included unmanned aircraft, experimental communications networks, electronic warfare systems, satellite connections, artificial intelligence applications, and technology intended to help commanders understand a battlefield faster than their opponents.
