The flight, designated VV30, marked a historic first dual launch for the Vega C rocket, made possible by a secondary payload adapter called Vespa. Both spacecraft were released at an altitude of about 820 kilometers, and both were flying freely just 116 minutes after liftoff. It was a clean, efficient mission — and one that carries significant implications for how scientists monitor the health of our planet.
FLEX is designed to reveal a phenomenon invisible to the human eye: the faint fluorescence emitted by plants as they photosynthesize. Equipped with the Fluorescence Imaging Spectrometer, the satellite will detect the subtle glow plants emit as they absorb sunlight — a glow that varies with plant health and environmental conditions. Think of it as a global stress test for vegetation, conducted from space.
FLEX will orbit in tandem with a Sentinel-3 satellite, which will provide complementary information on clouds, aerosols, water vapor, land surface temperature, land cover type, and additional vegetation parameters. That coordinated pairing is key — by combining FLEX's fluorescence readings with Sentinel-3's broader environmental data, scientists will be able to build the most detailed picture yet of how Earth's plant life is responding to climate change, drought, and other stressors.
Sentinel-3C is the third satellite in the Copernicus Sentinel-3 series. Like its two older siblings already in orbit, it carries a suite of cutting-edge instruments that systematically measure Earth's oceans, land, ice, and atmosphere — and it provides essential information in near-real time for ocean and weather forecasting. Sentinel-3A and Sentinel-3B, which launched in 2016 and 2018 respectively, remain active , but Sentinel-3C ensures continuity and redundancy in this critical data stream.
Both FLEX and Copernicus Sentinel-3C were built by Thales Alenia Space as the prime contractor, with the support of several European companies for the development of instruments. The Vega C rocket, capable of launching 2,300 kg into space, stands 35 meters tall and weighs 210 tonnes on the launch pad. It reaches orbit using three solid-propellant stages before a fourth liquid-propellant stage takes over for precise satellite placement.
The successful orbital insertion marks the second Vega C mission completed in 2026, with a third flight scheduled before the end of the year. Avio CEO Giulio Ranzo confirmed at an industry summit in Paris that the Italian rocket manufacturer is scaling its manufacturing and assembly operations to achieve a near-term launch rate of six Vega C flights per year, with an ultimate target capacity of nine launches annually.
The dual success of FLEX and Sentinel-3C is more than a technical achievement — it signals Europe's growing confidence in its independent access to space. As climate data becomes increasingly central to global policy decisions, the ability to continuously monitor Earth from orbit is no longer optional. These two satellites will spend years generating the kind of precise, large-scale environmental data that ground-based instruments simply cannot match, helping scientists, governments, and forecasters stay ahead of a rapidly changing world.
