Renowned neuroscientist Christof Koch is challenging long-held scientific assumptions by confronting the "hard problem" of consciousness — why and how subjective experience exists at all. Koch works at the Allen Institute for Brain Science and previously taught at MIT and Caltech , giving him decades of front-line experience studying the very organ he now questions. His argument is not fringe speculation — it's a serious scientific challenge that is gaining traction.
Materialism still dominates scientific thinking, but Koch highlights important gaps in this perspective. Even with major advances in neuroscience, scientists have yet to explain how subjective experience arises from physical brain processes — an unresolved issue known as the "hard problem" of consciousness. Koch presented his case at the Bial Foundation's "Behind and Beyond the Brain" symposium in Porto, Portugal, in April 2026, and his ideas have continued circulating through the scientific community ever since.
His presentation addressed three areas of tension: the difficulty of reducing conscious experience to physical mechanisms; the challenges posed by contemporary physics to defining what is "real"; and the role of extraordinary experiences — such as near-death experiences, mystical states, or episodes of terminal lucidity — that continue to resist a strictly scientific explanation. Each of these, Koch argues, points to a crack in the dominant model — one that may require an entirely different foundation to repair.
To address that question, Koch turns to a philosophical framework known as analytic idealism, which proposes that consciousness may be a fundamental feature of reality rather than something generated by the brain. This isn't a new idea — the concept proposes that consciousness is a fundamental aspect of reality, like mass or electrical charge, and goes back to antiquity — Plato took it seriously — and has had some prominent supporters over the years, including psychologist William James and philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell.
Koch also supports Integrated Information Theory, which proposes that any system with a sufficiently high level of integrated information has some form of subjective experience, offering a scientific interpretation of panpsychism. Koch does not dispute the brain's essential role in conscious experience — decades of research have shown that injuries, disease, anesthesia, and electrical stimulation can profoundly alter or even eliminate awareness. His point is more subtle: the brain may shape and filter consciousness, rather than manufacture it from scratch.
Which regions light up as someone perceives an object, experiences pain, retrieves a memory, or settles on a decision can all be observed. Networks tied to awareness have been pinned down. Yet none of it bridges the distance between electrical and chemical activity and the fact that there is something it is like to be you. That is the wall Koch is pushing against — and he's pushing hard.
Koch acknowledges that analytic idealism is not an established scientific theory but a metaphysical framework whose future depends on whether its ideas can be translated into empirically testable hypotheses. His research also includes developing new ways to identify signs of awareness in patients who appear unresponsive, helping to push the boundaries of how scientists detect and understand conscious states. That practical work gives his philosophical proposals real-world stakes — how we define consciousness determines who, or what, we believe deserves moral consideration. As artificial intelligence grows more sophisticated and neurotechnology more invasive, those questions are no longer purely academic.
